  This is definitely my favorite restaurant in Mendota. The food is great and served in a very appetizing way, and the service is superb. If not too busy at the moment, the owner likes to greet customers and make sure that everything is more than just OK.
  There is something for everybody at The Whistle Stop: kids meals, vegetarian meals, wonderful choice of meat, fish and poultry dishes, desserts. And the portions are quite large for the price.

  This food was definitely made with love. Its not often you sit down at a restaurant and get served hand sliced, hand dipped fried pickles. The food was exactly what you would want your family to eat. It tasted like farm to table. Every bite was delicious! The music set the tone for a delightful evening. It was Slightly understaffed and we waited a little longer than necessary for dessert and the check but overall I would recommend this restaurant to others.

  What a great location for a restaurant! It’s right at the railroad tracks and an Amtrak station. There is plenty of parking. The interior is in great condition as well. I was there on a Saturday night and they had a woman singing, which really made the ambience even better. The bar is really nice…. But wait, why aren’t they using it? OK more on that later.
  
  I have so much to say about a place with all the potential you could ask for but fell so woefully short. Where do I start?
  
  Why are all of those kids hanging around in that corner of the restaurant? Why are they kicking a soccer ball? Why did the soccer ball hit our table? Why not send an informed server to my table with drink and menu knowledge? Why did my Budweiser come from the kitchen and not the bar? See there that bar thingy right there. If you are going to serve me a can (tacky) of beer at least crack the darn thing open for me. The supposedly alcoholic drinks the others dining with me ordered….. which our server never knew a name for, and by the way……. of course came out of the kitchen, tasted like cranberry and flat 7 Up. Ugh!
  
  We ordered Fried Green Tomatoes as our appetizer, which you should at a Whistle Stop with down home Southern themed cooking right out of the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. I found them to be soggy and bland. The sauce was OK but didn’t help much. I went there planning on having Chicken and Sweet Potato Waffles but they were out of that particular choice. So I opted for the Smothered Fried Chicken with Mac & Cheese and Baked Beans. The chicken was dry. The smothered part, which I guess is supposed to be country gravy, didn’t help. The Mac & Cheese and Baked Beans were crammed in with the chicken in those diminutive faux cast iron skillets so that it became so mixed together I’m not sure exactly what I thought of either one. I also tried the Jambalaya – coagulated tomato paste seasoned with chili powder. Did I mention the restaurant wasn’t that busy and the wait time for the food was noticeably long? I usually give a pass for lengthy wait times, but this one was out there.

  So sad, I cannot in good conscience recommend Angie’s Whistle Stop for a myriad of crimes against dining. To say it was a train wreck would have been too cliché.
